Having recently sailed over 1600 miles on a 45 foot sailing vessel, I can tell you one thing you will need. Some kind of stabilizer on your video camera.

At present “SteadyCam” makes one of the most successful stabilization devices available, but hold on to your wallet. They are not inexpensive. I fact may cost more than your camera.
Shooting anything from a boat is problematic .. adding a long lens capability to it can only exacerbate those problems.

Take a look at your other options when it comes to the recording media. You may find you will get better battery life from a mini-DV or HDD camera than a DVD camera (plus the cost of the DVD media is not low)
